Vietnamese electric vehicle maker VinFast has commenced series production of its VF6 and VF7 electric SUVs at its manufacturing facility in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu. The move marks VinFast’s first assembly operations outside Vietnam and its long-awaited debut in India’s burgeoning EV sector.

Production Kickoff Details

The Sriperumbudur plant, established with an initial capacity of 50,000 vehicles per year, hosted a formal inauguration ceremony attended by Tamil Nadu’s Chief Minister and VinFast executives. The VF6 compact SUV and mid-size VF7 feature VinFast’s advanced 90 kWh lithium-ion battery pack, delivering a range of up to 550 km on a single charge.

Vehicle Specifications

  • VF6: 0–100 km/h in 7.2 seconds, 150 kW motor output, 400 Nm torque
  • VF7: 0–100 km/h in 6.5 seconds, dual-motor AWD option, 300 kW combined output, 620 Nm torque
Both models come equipped with Level 2 ADAS features, 15.6-inch infotainment display, over-the-air software updates, and bi-directional vehicle-to-grid charging capability.

Localisation and Partnerships

VinFast’s plant benefits from a 30% local content mandate, sourcing chassis components and electronics from Tamil Nadu suppliers. The company has partnered with Tata Power for charging infrastructure deployment across major cities and Hyundai Glovis for logistics support.

Market Strategy and Pricing

VinFast aims to launch the VF6 at ₹35 lakh and VF7 at ₹45 lakh (ex-showroom) to compete with the MG ZS EV and Tata Harrier EV. Early-bird booking discounts and financing packages backed by SBI are already attracting consumer interest ahead of October deliveries.

Economic Impact

The factory’s operations have created over 2,500 direct jobs and support 8,000 ancillary roles. VinFast plans to scale capacity to 100,000 vehicles annually by 2027, further boosting local manufacturing and export prospects.

Future Outlook

With India targeting 30% EV adoption by 2030, VinFast’s entry adds fresh competition to accelerate electric mobility. The company is evaluating a VF8 flagship SUV and VF9 MPV for production at the Tamil Nadu plant in 2026.
