Dense fog North India brought transport networks to a near standstill early Tuesday as visibility dropped sharply across several states, disrupting road traffic, delaying trains, and grounding flights during peak morning hours. Commuters, travellers, and logistics operators faced widespread inconvenience as thick fog blanketed highways, rail corridors, and airport runways.
Authorities issued advisories urging caution, while transport operators struggled to restore normal operations amid continuing low-visibility conditions.
Visibility Drops to Critical Levels
According to weather observers, visibility in parts of Delhi-NCR, Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Bihar fell to dangerously low levels in the early hours, in some locations dropping below 50 metres. The severe conditions triggered travel disruption fog across urban and intercity routes.
Motorists reported slow-moving traffic and frequent pile-ups on highways, particularly along fog-prone stretches. Traffic police deployed additional personnel to regulate movement and prevent accidents during the worst-hit hours.
Flights Delayed, Diverted at Major Airports
Air travel was among the worst affected as flight delays India mounted at key airports. Several early-morning departures and arrivals were delayed due to low runway visibility, while a few flights were diverted or rescheduled.
Airlines issued passenger advisories recommending early arrival at airports and close monitoring of flight status. Airport operators said low-visibility procedures were activated, but recovery remained slow due to persistent fog.
Passengers expressed frustration over extended waiting times, missed connections, and limited clarity on revised schedules.
Trains Running Late, Services Slowed
Rail operations were also hit hard, with train delays fog reported across northern rail zones. Several long-distance trains arrived hours behind schedule, while suburban services in affected regions ran at reduced speeds for safety reasons.
Railway officials said speed restrictions were imposed to minimise risks in low-visibility conditions, acknowledging that punctuality would remain affected until fog intensity eased.
Weather Authority Issues Warning
The India Meteorological Department issued an IMD fog warning, stating that dense to very dense fog conditions were likely to persist in parts of north and northwest India over the next 24 to 48 hours.
“According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), dense fog conditions may continue during night and early morning hours, significantly impacting visibility and travel safety.
Road Safety Concerns Rise
Traffic authorities urged drivers to avoid non-essential travel during early morning hours, use fog lights responsibly, and maintain safe distances. Emergency services reported a spike in minor accidents linked to reduced visibility and delayed response times.
Experts stressed that fog-related accidents often occur due to overspeeding and sudden braking, calling for heightened caution until weather conditions improve.
Impact on Daily Life and Logistics
Beyond commuter inconvenience, the fog episode disrupted supply chains, courier deliveries, and school schedules in some districts. Logistics operators reported delays in overnight freight movement, particularly for perishable goods.
Educational institutions in fog-prone areas said attendance was affected as parents opted to delay travel until conditions improved.
When Will Conditions Improve?
Meteorologists expect gradual improvement later in the day as temperatures rise, though fog is likely to return during late-night and early-morning hours over the coming days. Western disturbances and calm wind conditions are contributing to the persistence of fog across the region.
Residents have been advised to stay updated with local weather bulletins and plan travel with flexibility.
A Seasonal Challenge Intensifies
While winter fog is a recurring phenomenon, experts note that its increasing intensity and duration pose growing challenges for transport safety and planning. Improved forecasting, better communication, and stricter safety compliance are seen as key to reducing disruption.
For now, dense fog North India remains a significant hurdle, with travellers bracing for continued delays until weather conditions stabilise.
